The Importance of a Positive Fast for Intraabdominal Injuries
In this single center retrospective review of a trauma database, the authors found that a negative fast and physical exam had better test characteristics than either alone in identifying intra abdominal injury and pediatric patients. In theory, for future studies, I think prospectively enrolling would help. Using this ex-fast, you can aid in your workup, your disposition, as well as potentially limit CT scans in these patients really trying to limit radiation.
