Each point of light you see in this image is an individual galaxy itself, probably with hundreds of billionsof stars. Our own milkyway galaxy has a couple hundred billion stars. This photo is representative of holding a grain of sand up to the sky at arm's length. It starts to give you a little tiny bit of a sense of just how big the universe is.
But the images from the Webb Space Telescope still provide our best look yet at the formation of the universe. NASA astrophysicist Amber Straughn and science journalist Josh Sokol unpack humanity’s newest glimpse at the cosmos.
