The Role of Rehearsing in Orchestras

The prevailing philosophy these days is to try to cajole the musicians into doing what we think is best for the music. Most orchestras have anywhere between three and fifteen hours to put together a program for performance. There's generally, but again, not always, less time for rehearsal in American and English orchestras than there is in Central European, South American and Asian orchestras. efficiency is a prized commodity, especially in English orchestras. While a more slow, exploratory process is more appropriate in particular in German orchestras.
