Edgar Allan Poe used to do this sort of like a newspaper challenge where he's like, you know, send me your codes and I will break them. And it all sort of happened because doing cryptography by hand is kind of tough and it's error prone. But the fallout of this was that there were a lot of cryptographic techniques that you could do by hand that were kind of easy and sometimes fun and sometimes not.
