Coffee had no effect on the amount of sleep or sleep quality when it was consumed within four hours of bed, but they found that alcohol and nicotine did. The authors are like, yeah, that's probably not probably not how it works. They say a more plausible explanation is that this is just they're observing a self-regulating mechanism where people who know that they're going to have no issue sleeping might be more likely to have caffeine at night.
