The Importance of Background Checks on Gun Ownership
I understand the case for laws governing firearms ownership, but they aren't intrinsic to the process of owning a firearm. I could quite easily buy a gun from a neighbour or a wholesaler without the government being involved in that process at all. At root, that transaction is no different than buying a toaster. Second Amendment advocates oppose them on the grounds that they do not wish the government to have a list of who owns what. The second is that gun registries don't work. Canada used to have a long gun registry. It lasted from 2003 to 2012 and ended up costing 2.7 billion. And it wasn't used to help solve a single homicide case during that period.
