Bacon, a Friar in the 12th Century.
Bacon was a friar in the mid 12 hundred is doing work on optics. Is also our earliest source of knowledge, really, on european gunpowder. Travelled abroad to study different countries and exchange ideas with other religious orders like franciscans or dominicans. Also thinks that he might be able to use burning mirrors to try and direct the energy of the sun towards opposing armies. So he's into all kinds of interesting ideas. He's again, doing experiments himself. And fortunaely, he was seriously hurt, but he did survive.
