Aristotle had a list of archetypes that he thought were present in story including as well as a couple other even older famous or Greek philosophers and fiction writers before him Campbell is a distillation of Aristotle and Menander And a whole bunch of stuff that happened in between including like Arthurian legends and all of that But that's not the only one Carl Jung the he's Swiss right the 20th century.
