The Importance of the First Language That a Child Learns

There are language mechanisms in our brains that are related to these critical or sensitive periods of development. If a child misses a critical period and does not require any language, then that makes them vulnerable to language problems later in life. We want deaf and hard of hearing children to have exposure to one or the other. Many countries across the world expect their children to become fluent in multiple languages.
