What Is Enlightenment?
The will is that which enables men to choose either good or evil, either right or wrong. There is no merit in choosing what is right unless it is possible to choose is wrong. A paternalist government based on the benevolence of a ruler who treats his subjects as ungrown up children is the greatest conceivable despotism and destroys all freedom. Once he gives this up, or if he is too immature to realize it, then he is pro tanto, a barbarian and not civilized. The enlightenment is simply the ability of men to determine their own lives," says Kant.
