Russia realizes it can't stand up to the power of the west, that it can undermine the west by sowing discord. So they will intervene in almost any debate where they think there might be a possibility of stirring discord in russia's adversaries. That's been a huge bougt effort, troll effort, to try and flood social mediocites with provocative statements disinformation about any subject which could be controversial.
