Tragically, the turbulent geopolitical environment of nations like Afghanistan has threatened to destroy whatever is left. With the rise of religious extremists and insurgent groups such as the Taliban, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of looted and destroyed archaeological sites. Poverty and the need to feed families in times of war often trump qualms about the loss of cultural heritage.
