Lessons Learned From the Onion Futures Market

In the 1950s, onion producers got really upset about the functioning of the onion futures markets. That was the most successful post World War II commodity futures market at the old CME. Roger Gray wrote what is still, I think, the most famous article ever written by an agricultural economist called onions revisited. And he showed how onion producers shot themselves in the foot when they increased prices too much. In the onion futures sector to this day, onion futures are still banned.
