Police and the History of English Common Law
For most of the history of english common law, there have not been police. It's something that arose mainly in britain and the united states within the last 200 years. This was largely a response to the threats of possible resistance or unruliness by large laboring populations in cities. That was sort of the pivotal time when things like what we would call police started to emerge.
