Lydia Estes Pinkham was born in 1819, the tenth child of a modestly wealthy Quaker family. She and her sister Julianna were among the founder members of the Lynn Female Anti-Slavery Society. Lydia stood in the way of a railroad conductor who was trying to send Douglas to the car reserved for blacks and Irish. Then came the second stage of Lydia's life, that of wife and mother.
