The History of the Jet Industry in Whitby
The first jet boom was almost certainly in the Neolithic so we've got a good five and a half thousand years of jet history associated with the Whitby area. And what about in the Victorian period because that was when sort of it's most famous for isn't it? Yes the Victorian boom started at the death of George the 4th and they said the nation was in mourning. They said the ornament would be jets and that meant only one thing in that time period it meant Whitby jets. We go from two jet shops to almost 200 factories overnight. By the peak of the boom in the 1860s I think it's the 1861 census over half the population described themselves as a jet worker
