The Irish mob was more of a shared social contract characterized by a loosely connected sphere of influence that started with the lama at the top and ended with various street gangs at the bottom. Prohibition provided something the underworld never had before, a single dominating racket that was so insanely profitable it tipped the balance of power. Many working class Irish were specialized in a specific brand of criminal activity,. whether it was B&Es, breaking an entry, a safe cracking, the snatch racket aka kidnapping, murder for hire or body disposal.
