Introduction
As people become more concerned with gender identity, there's a push to make the words they and their perform double duty as both singular and plural pronouns. One possible reason that most languages feature noun verb agreement is that it serves as a form of error checking. Of all the pronouns, you is the only one for which people have developed colloquial versions to distinguish the singular from the plural. With they, we have an interesting conflict between the need for a gender neutral pronoun and the need to distinguish between singular and plural.
