What's the Difference Between a Counter and an Up Down Counter?

The metric API for open tlemetry has only in the past month been stabilized. There's probably four or five different kinds of what we call metric instruments. A counter can't have negative values recorded, so it's monotonically increasing only. The histogram instrument is the one you would use if you really need to collect distribution data about the recordings that you were interested in.
