There is that attention and sort of salience of noticing that the others in pain. And then there is the empathy component, which is to some extent or to some degree, feeling that suffering. But then what comes next is an competitive drive to nurture or help. That's a phrase that comes from animal research on maternal caregiving. So it's not just kind of experiencing or sympathizing with another person, but also having this added motivation to help.
