What Is More Like Temperature or More Like Life?
The fundamental question is whether consciousness is more like temperature or more like life. The story of heat was a example of what you might think of as really successful reductionism. Life doesn't come down to one thing that is identical to something else. It's a collection of properties that are istantiated to varying degrees. We can talk about the temperature of the surface of the sun, and we have an absolute zero kinds of things that we have no direct personal experience of. But none the less, we understand it by recognizing that it, in fact, is not one thing, it's many things.
