How to Upgrade a Library Without Breaking It

The safety net that's needed to keep dependencies up to date is if it's not there, it can be difficult to build. I often find that I'll go look up the documentation for a library that I'm using and I'll find a method that I want to use in the documentation. So then I have to make a decision. Do I upgrade this library just to get that method? And, you know, what's the impact of doing so? There are a lot of projects where that upgrade is risky.
