Are You Interested in Semitic Linguistics as a Kid?
I like to start by asking people how they became the kind of scientist they are. I ask you, were you interested in languages as a kid? Not particularly. Partly it was because my father was a Semitic scholar. And when I was about 12 years old, I guess, read his doctoral dissertation on a medieval humanitarian. It had a lot of historical, Semitic linguistics in it, but it was not a special interest.
