Judge Wingate's Racism in the Courtroom
Sarah Graves' mother Mary wrote to the court asking for leniency, saying that she didn't raise her daughter to be a racist. Judge Henry Wingate said that Graves couldn't make the excuse that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Craig Anderson's sister Barbara addressed Graves and Richards: You're thirst for the blood of an innocent African American caused you to pour more fuel on the fire. Shelby Richards was sentenced to eight years and Sarah Graves would serve five. Eight days later, Robert Rice, who was not present on the night Craig was murdered, but had participated in the other attacks, was sentenced to 10 years.
