The Origins of Souls in the Early Church
Pelagius is the first person to really stand against that Augustine, Augustinian formulation. Part of what drives this debate is a fundamental difference in terms of where souls come from and how that fits into God's plan for human salvation. If like Pelagius, you believe in creationism, that the soul goes into the body that is pre-created by God, then that makes the inheritance of sin not possible. Whereas if, like Augustine, you believe that the soul and the body are created at the same moment in conception, this opens the way for the inheritance of death from Adam.
