The number of ways we are willing to let our children die has narrowed so much. The scope of what constitutes a stupid preventable death shrinks and shrinks until they're like well if my kid never does X they're never gonna have Y happen to them because that would be stupid. I feel like our parents were like well my kids not swimming in the East River pushing pieces of poop out of the way, but it's fine if they make ramps out of garb or jump with their BMX bikes almost getting hit by a car. We wouldn't feel like at the funeral that we are the world's worst parents right?
