I don't know if a satiric or a comictick is one that will necessarily avert disaster. I think it took us by surprise when, as you say, science became the subject of public discourse in quite a heavy way. It took scientists themselves time to realize that what they need to do is to go back and explain how the process works. But rather like with pauline organizations, you can choose the one that will give you the answer you want.
