The Urban Institute estimates that by 2040, the number of people renting their homes or apartments will surge to 12.9 million. And in particular, those are likely to be black older adults. Whether they like it or not, a lot of them will wind up in some kind of facility, likely a nursing home. In sociology jargon, these places are considered total institutions.
