After the dryphus affair, even people who weren't anti semetic lost faith in the state. The church was actually very clever in that they saw this and were like, oh, we can use this division among people on the basis of anti semetism. They would say, jewish people want to divide us. And look at us, we are divided. So it makes total sense that there would be calls for the formation of a jewish state.
