The Government's Proposal to Make the NHS More Efficient
The government is looking at ways to make the process of getting care more efficient. GPs will be asked to give people a wider range of choice, with an onus on them to suggest private options as well as NHS options for referrals. The challenge is that that's really only an option available to people that have the means to pay. It starts to dilute that founding principle of the NHS that it should be available to all regardless of our means to pay - there could be some quite difficult inequalities that emerge from this.
