The idea of finding relatives by means of the newspaper grew. Papers started a column called Lost Friends, which people called out for family that disappeared on the slave trail or to swallow it up into slavery. A message from a woman who had been snatched from her mother when she was a girl might reach hundreds of thousands. One lost friend wrote: "This is the only child I have and I desire to find him much"
