The hilary step was a near vertical, 12 meter high rock face covered in snow and ice climbing. It represented the most challenging part of climbing everest, final frontier before reaching the summit. Daniel had to negotiate on a very, ah, like a knife edge ridge,. as they're going up, and very focused. Trying to pick your way down a mountain while a line of determined hykers is making their way up is a whole other exercise in logistics.
