Every time in one year, we run a deficit, then that adds to the overall national debt. So just to summarize, deficit, a budget deficit is a difference between taxation spending in one year. And the national debt is an accumulation of all those deficits, plus any unpaid interest, and minus any efforts to pay off the debt.
