The gravitational waves we are detecting come from black holes and other objects that are over a billion light years away sometimes. By the time they reach us these signals are tiny and shrouded in background noise. Right now the best technology for detecting gravitational waves is with a machine called a laser interferometer. You take a laser beam you split it into two separate beams which travel in different directions before being brought back together.
