35 years of de facto control came to an end with the liberation at the end of World War II. For ordinary Koreans, this was an opportunity to both throw off the yoke of Japanese colonial domination and to develop their own identity as a legitimate independent nation state. But it all came at an extraordinarily high price and which is essentially political autonomy and agency. The G7 summit will take place in Hiroshima. One thing that's very significant, for example, if we look ahead to the G7 summit, many Koreans died in the bombing of Hiroshima.
