Popeye is a suppressed desire. He personifies the desire most of us have both to be strong and to sock some of the unpleasant people we encounter. Although Popeye himself says he would never hit anyone as hard as he could because it's wrong to kill people. There was a psychoanalytic piece done about him in an American paper in 1932.
