The Importance of CRSPA CAS9 for Human Genome Editing
CRSPA CAS9 system allows researchers not only to recognize and remove DNA sequences, but also modify them. In 2012, Jennifer Daldera and Emmanuel Charpentier demonstrated how CRSPA could be used to slice any DNA sequence of choice. The major worry among scientists revolves around the long-term consequences of genetic changes made in a human egg, sperm, or embryo. Edits made in the germline will affect every cell in an organism and will also be passed onto any offspring. Human germline modification could theoretically allow for the installation of genes to confer protection against infections, outsimers, or even aging.
