The Historical Summation of Exodus 12
Sarna: The historical summation of verses 40 and 41, this is Exodus 12, do not exactly accord with the 400 years of Egyptian oppression predicted in Genesis 1513. He notes that maybe the numbers aren't to be taken at face value, but they are what they are because of a literary preference for mathematical symmetry. Sarna writes, this kind of symmetry follows a symmetrical pattern well established in the patriarchal narratives and elsewhere in the book of Genesis.
