The Origins of Taiwan's Tea Industry

Taiwan's tea industry was initially centered in Daudao-chung on the Dan Shui River. John Dodd and Li Chunshang began growing tea in the hills of Muja, just south of Taipei. Tea became Taiwan's biggest export after sugar and camfer. The big break for Taiwan's tea industry came in 1869 with the opening of the Suez Canal.
