The Tokugawa shogunate was overthrown. This is a coup d'etat. There were rebellions for some time. Then they realized that the samurai are being essentially wiped out of existence. The real power lay not with the major emperor, but with his cabinet. And from this point onwards, Japan becomes an imperial power.
