Colin wallace was a born and raised northern irish unionist. The government had made grave mistakes early on when trying to quash the i r a's revolt, such as mass interment without trial of suspected republicans subversives in 19 71. In short, they didn't just have an act war to win, but a public relations ware on their hands as well. Anything which decreased popular support for the provisionals or loyalist terrar groups was considered legitimate caloange. As wallace's career continued he became increasingly uncomfortable with some of the rumors he heard.
