In the past, pilgrimage was often undertaken even under orders as a penance because it was very dangerous and you often had to make great personal sacrifice. "I think nowadays in the church we sometimes have a very simplistic understanding of what a vocation is," she says. She adds that many saints who live out multiple vocations at different stages are unusual but not scandalous.
