I've seen some first drafts that I had to overhaul really dramatically, including those on staff. Most of the time, they came in a little bit draggyled and exhausted. But no, there were some writers, few writers, who would turn in something that was completely perfect. One example would be Michael Lewis, who just seems incapable of writing a bad sentence. And then, and that's the great thing about journalism: The actual narrative that you read is like 10 sentences.
