Studies show that people who are insecure about their group membership will be more hostile towards people who are part of the outgroup. Do you think part of what is maybe taking place in this outrage machine is this attempt to look good for people in your in-group because you know that you're not really holding those beliefs, but you feel like you have to in order to have that social validation? "I think that the research on identity and the psychology of identity plays hugely into our social media usage and abuse," she says.
