How to Remove a Tracheostomy Tube Safely

There's a capping protocol and which would be the best way to test can the patient breathe comfortably without a trache. If they can make it for 24 hours in a row, we feel quite comfortable that the tracheostomy tube can be removed safely. Once they are, once you've decided to decanulate and remove the trache, there is still that hole in the neck. Without pressure over the hole and talking or coughing, air is going to continue to leak out or come out. And usually in a matter of three days, maybe seven or eight days, that has completely healed.
