The Cost of Forecasting

If i had some very small data, you know, maybe a time series. I probably could use just about any technique and not bump into too much trouble. But all o f these things cannot happen when you have to deal with hundreds of thousands of times ses. So certainly industry must be looking at the cost benefit trade offs. Do you have any insight into how general industry practitioners look at a problem like this?
