Stereotypes allow people to go beyond what they observe to predict how others, including themselves, are likely to behave. By stereotyping disabled people as dependent and weak, non disabled people can consider themselves as helpful and strong. Because we expect a group of people to be dependent, we may not even notice when they are doing things that are more independent or inter dependent.
