The Evolution of Feather-Powered Flight

Stephen J Gould said feathers were an adaptation to stressors related to cold climates and therefore provided warmth as the first reason that they kind of came into the biological world. There's a whole realm of skin adaptations that are reptilian looking right that protect you from your environment, he says. Then flights was in Gould's opinion an expectation that once these feathers existed it became possible for flight to evolve.
