The Role of Reason in Argumentation
The Moats were described to me by a friend as history's first rationalist. They have no explicit conception of reason and they don't seem to appeal to reason as a source of knowledge. So I'd be very uncomfortable labeling them rationalists. And if the consequentialist ethics shows that some custom, uh, doesn't have the best sorts of consequences, even if it's a beloved traditionalcustom, they would say, well, we better give that off.
