The Role of Humor in Politics and Society

In the first golden age of English satire, you want to talk a bit about just the role of laughter more broadly in politics and society. There are times in history when laughter is considered socially dangerous and here as satire in England is enjoying a nice patch in the 1590s. It can't be stopped once it starts; therefore there's a real danger that people will make it stop if they don't. In classical world, I suppose, Plato considers it this sort of malicious blend of pleasure and pain in perceiving humanity-social element in being laughed at.
